APROPOS the news report, ‘Pemra asks TV channels to observe decency in non-news content’. For once the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has struck the right chord. Private TV channels in their pursuit of better ratings are crossing all limits of propriety.
Only in our part of the world do children of impressionable age sit glued to TV for hours together with parents, watching dramas that show questionable content, such as a wife being slapped by the husband, or females accused of having an extramarital relationship. What sort of grooming are we providing to our future generations?
In the West, children go to play areas in the evenings to expend their energies, returning for an early supper and thereafter to bed .In our country the entire family is engrossed in soap operas, and dinner is never taken before 10pm. Whatever happened to ‘early to bed and early to rise’?
Pemra has a valid point. Some remedial measures are needed to put society back on track.
