KARACHI: The Democrats panel on Saturday swept the annual election of the Karachi Press Club, defeating the rival Progressive Panel.

Imtiaz Faran, The Democrats’ candidate for president, secured 671 votes while his rival Ahmed Malik bagged 530.

Arman Sabir defeated Shahid Jatoi by securing 925 votes against the latter’s 251 to become the club’s secretary.

Other candidates of the winning panel who were declared successful by the election committee headed by Prof Tauseef Ahmed Khan were: Saeed Sarbazi, vice president with 894 votes; Raja Kamran, treasurer with 876 votes; and Hanif Akbar, joint secretary with 872 votes.

The candidates who were elected as members of the governing body were: Khursheed Abbasi (892 votes), Shazia Hasan (855), Abul Hasan (853), Atiqur Rehman (835), Waheed Rajpar (825), Ashraf Bhatti (804) and Shoaib Jatt (779).
