KARACHI, June 26: A young man drowned in the sea while an infant was rescued on Sunday when thousands of people throng the city’s coastline. Officials of Emergency Rescue Centre, Hawkesbay, said that Naeem Ahmed, 25, along with his friends had come to Sonera Beach late on Saturday night. Strong waves swept him away around 2:30am. Police was informed about the drowning in the morning.

At Cape Montz, an infant was rescued from the rough seas off the coast when strong waves swept him away from her mother lap at the beach. Rescue workers said that the lifeguard on duty acted promptly and rescued the baby.

Chief Fire Officer Kazim Ali said that both the beaches had been closed for public, but picnickers still put their lives at risk at a time when sea was very rough.

He said that on Sunday morning, over 10,000 people went to the Cape Montz and Naleem Point which were officially closed for public. He said when the lifeguards and other senior officials of the rescue services tried to clear the beach some people misbehaved with them and roughed up the lifeguards.

Finally, police mobiles were called in and the two beaches were cleared by afternoon.
