KARACHI, June 26: An anonymous caller informed the police helpline identifying himself as the son of a senator being kidnapped by unknown persons created panic among the ranks of police and law enforcement agencies here on Sunday, which later turned out to be a fake call.

Police said that an anonymous caller made a distress call on ‘Madadgar 15’ and identified himself as Rasheed Ahmed son of Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, senator from Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal. The police counter checked to verify it from Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, who denied such happening and said his sons were safe.

The anonymous caller had informed the police that he was kidnapped near Guru Mandir intersection by unknown gunmen. He was blindfolded and taken to a house where he managed to make the call to inform the Madadgar, police said.

City police chief Tariq Jamil said that the caller told the police that he was kept in a house in North Nazimabad. The police traced the call, which suggested that it was made from Gulshan-i-Iqbal. The area where he was kept and the call being made did not match each other.

Some four calls were made on police helpline number with intervals. The caller’s position and the place he was identifying did not match each other in any of the instances. “I spoke to Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, who said all his sons were in Quetta and safe,” Mr Jamil added.

He said that the anonymous caller had been changing the location of his kidnapping.
