WESTMINSTER: The British Government will do its best to facilitate the arrival in Palestine of 31,000 more Jewish refugees, subjected to the criterion of economic absorptive capacity.

Announcing this in the Commons today [Nov 10] the Colonial Secretary, Mr Oliver Stanley, said that up to September 20, 1943, 43,922 Jewish refugees had been admitted out of a total of 75,000 allowed for under the existing quota system. There were thus, he said, “31,000 who, it might be assumed, would have reached Palestine before March 31, 1944 — the end of the five-year immigration period referred to in the White Paper of 1939 — but for the war.

Col. Stanley added that the British Government had reached the conclusion that it would be inequitable to close the doors to these persons on account of time factor.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Karachi,] in view of paucity of Muslim candidates for posts of Junior Assistants in the Sind Subordinate Secretariat Service Commission will be prepared to receive further applications from Muslim graduates in arts, science, commerce or law, says a Government Press Note. They must not be under 18 years of age and not more than 28 years on January 1, 1944.
