KARACHI: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf is working to constitute a representative committee of residents living in the federal government quarters in six different localities, including Pakistan Quarters, Jehangir Quarters, Clayton Quarters, under the supervision of Sindh Governor Imran Ismail to hammer out some feasible solution within three months given by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, who deferred the implementation of the apex court order, to get government facilities vacated from illegal occupants.

This emerged on Sunday when a delegation of the residents from the said localities met area MPA Jamal Siddiqui (PS-106), who asked the delegation to select one member from each locality to suggest different workable options acceptable to all affected residents.

The MPA said the PTI was making all-out efforts to find some amicable solution to the pressing issue without resorting to their forcible eviction from the government quarters.

Responding to a question, the PTI leader said that his party was working on emergency basis and he had taken next week’s time from Prime Minister Imran Khan and Minister for Housing Tariq Bashir Cheema to submit them with alternative options approved by residents.

Replying to another question, he said that besides him, Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain, who is elected member from the locality in the National Assembly, would also be part of the committee.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Wednesday granted a two-month extension in the deadline for eviction of illegal occupants from Karachi’s Pakistan Quarters after a court-ordered eviction operation resulted in clashes between police and protesters, leaving at least 12 people injured on both sides and over a dozen arrested.

The Supreme Court in July ordered eviction within 10 days of alleged illegal occupants from Pakistan Quarters, Martin Quarters, Jamshed Quarters, Clayton Quarters, Federal Capital Area, and other residential areas in Karachi for federal government employees.

Since then, heavy contingents of police have attempted to vacate the ‘illegal occupants’ by force.

Although Sindh Governor Imran Ismail claimed during a press conference that the CJP had “kindly consented to hold the evacuation process for three months,” the top judge in court granted an extension of two months for resolution of the issue.
