PM reviews progress to convert PM House into university

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday chaired a meeting to monitor the progress on converting the Prime Minister House into university and directed to constitute a committee, headed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman, to review the draft charter of the proposed university, Radio Pakistan reported.

The meeting, held in the federal capital, was attended by Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood, HEC Chairman Tariq Banuri and other officials of the commission.

It also approved constitution of separate committees for evaluation of the draft charter for the university and selection of its vice-chancellor. The minister concerned for education would head the search committee for the selection of vice-chancellor.

The meeting decided that the HEC chairman would head a committee tasked with the operational affairs and design of the university.

A conference titled 'Emerging Challenges for Pakistan and the Region' will be held at the new educational institution in December this year.

The meeting also approved the establishment of the Institute of Advanced Studies in the first phase of the university.

Salam Sir: While I appreciate this noble cause, I would like to share my humble views. Sir, governments come and go. If the next PM wants to have a similar property he will have no choice but to construct a new PM. Can we imagine national wealth that will go out? On balance, constructing a new educational facility may not cost that much as a PM because the facilities required for that are not so lavish!

Imran won't be the last PM. Where will the next one stay? Will s/he build a bigger, more lavish house? You won't see the white house changed to a university. Our country can't be held hostage by the whims of our politicians. Build a seperate university. Close down the PM house for the 5 years (and more I hope!) you're in term. How can you change a house into a university? Both serve different purposes and thus have different plans. Houses have rooms, universities have lecture halls. Houses have single person bathrooms, universities have stalls. It's ridiculous to think that a PM house can be translated to a university. Imho, it's giving the next megalomaniac after Imran a good excuse to build a bigger, badder PM house (something this country can't afford)

Hats off to Imran Khan's to make university of Prime Minister House.His noble cause is appreciated all over the world. The vice chancellor must be a dynamic and result oriented. A law also to be chalked out that future PM may not reverse Khan's decision.(Texas)
