KARACHI: Sindh Governor Imran Ismail on Saturday said local train and circular railway would soon be launched in the city which would officially be announced by the railway minister in the middle of this month.

“[Karachi] Circular Railway and local train will soon be launched. Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid will make announcement [for these schemes] on Oct 16 in Karachi,” said the governor while addressing members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). He said the railway minister’s visit to Karachi had the main agenda to announce those transport schemes.

He said the local rail service would be operated on the main line from Landhi to Cantonment station.

He said tenders had been issued for the procurement of fire engines — part of the effort to prevent fire incidents in business centres.

He announced the formation of a governor-businessmen liaison committee.

He told the audience that a water desalination plant would be set up at Karachi Port.

Governor Ismail said there was no policy of the government to harass the beneficiaries of an amnesty scheme, which had legal cover.
