KARACHI, June 15: The City Nazim, Niamatullah Khan, has stressed the need for improving the existing zakat system, calling upon those responsible for the distribution of zakat to remember that they would be held accountable for their performance here in the world hereafter. Terming the current day’s society grossly unequal, he said a just distribution of wealth among all classes was necessary to fight poverty and backwardness, adding that assistance to the poor was their right.

He said this while distributing dowry articles among girls of more than 100 needy families, besides giving sewing machines to other needy families, at the office of the city government’s Store Department.

The dowry articles, besides other necessary items also included beds, showcases, dressing tables and almirahs.

The nazim said that serious efforts were needed to eradicate poverty from Karachi.

Earlier, Abdul Rasheed Baig said that the particular gathering was the seventh by the city government in which the nazim had distributed aid amongst the needy.

He informed that the nazim had distributed over Rs15 million worth relief assistance out of the City Nazim Welfare Fund among deserving families of Karachi in the last four years.

He said earlier, financial aid was distributed among the needy students, tricycles among special persons, sewing machines among needy women, and cabins and pushcarts among jobless men.
