KARACHI: Veteran Samiullah Khan Niazi produced a sensational burst of seam bowling on Thursday when the veteran left-armer’s six wickets helped holders SNGPL skittle out NBP for just 44 on day two of their fifth-round Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship fixture.

Replying to SNGPL’s 265, NBP added mere 41 runs to their overnight score of 3-0 before being bundled out inside 18 overs at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Tailender Mushtaq Ahmed Kalhoro emerged as the highest scorer with 16 not out while NBP captain Shan Masood’s 13 at the top of the order were the only other double figures entry in the scoresheet.

The 36-year-old Samiullah, who made two wicketless One-day International appearances against Zimbabwe in early 2008, claimed 6-11 in seven overs with three of victims — Akbar-ur-Rehman, Umar Siddique and Kamran Ghulam — failing to score as NBP lost four wickets without adding a single run to the team total of 16-1.

On a day when 20 wickets fell, SNGPL were dismissed for 164 in the second innings, leaving NBP with a daunting target of 386. The latter reached 11-0 by stumps after spinner Mohammad Asghar (4-35) and the Sukkur-born paceman Mushtaq (4-43) had triggered SNGPL’s collapse.

KRL squandered advantage of taking a 76-run lead on the first innings against HBL at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi when they slumped to 91-6.

HBL, who resumed at 50-1 in response to KRL’s 235, managed a hugely disappointing tally of 159 with Pakistan discard Umar Akmal making 33 and skipper Imran Farhat an unbeaten 29. Left-arm paceman Sadaf Hussain picked up 4-54.

Wapda’s tailenders Ehsan Adil and Mohammad Asif wagged merrily to give their side a decisive 115-run lead against ZTBL at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.

Resuming at 27-2, Wapda batted all day to add 304 runs with Mohammad Saad contributing a solid 89 from 175 balls with 12 boundaries while engineering a revival from the depths of 79-4. But it was the Ehsan-Adil partnership that changed the tide.

However, Asif was forced to retire after being hit on the hand by paceman Mohammad Umair after having made 34 in the ninth-wicket stand of 70 with Ehsan but rejoined his partner when last man Hasnain Shah became seamer Mohammad Ali’s sixth victim.

Ehsan reached a career-best 78 in a 109-ball effort that included eight fours and three sixes. Ali has thus far taken 6-97 in 24 overs.

SSGCL were on verge of a three-day victory after forcing PTV to follow on at the Marghazar Cricket Ground in the federal capital. After extending their Wednesday’s score of 334-7 to 375 all out, SSGCL shot out their rivals for 77 in 22.5 overs.

Batting again, PTV were 199-4 and still need 99 to avert innings defeat.

Rawalpindi made a positive response to Karachi Whites’ massive tally of 491 by closing on 161-3 at the UBL Sports Complex with skipper Umar Waheed (75) and Pakistan limited-overs all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz (39) currently engaged in an unbroken partnership of 80.

Left-handed opener Ali Rafiq compiled a patient 165-ball 80 as Lahore Whites posted 228-5 while responding to Peshawar’s 295 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The carefree Fata batsmen braced themselves for a tough Friday after reaching 67-1 while replying to Islamabad’s commanding total of 543 at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad.

Hosts Multan capitulated for 149 to hand Lahore Blues a first-innings lead of 116 at the Multan Cricket Stadium before the visiting team negotiated two overs of the second innings without either scoring or losing any wicket.
