The United Kingdom's National Crime Agency on Monday announced to have "arrested a former Pakistani politically exposed person", aged 40, along with his 30-year-old wife, "in connection with alleged money laundering in the United Kingdom believed to be the result of corruption in Pakistan".
According to a statement issued by the UK's agency, the couple, who were arrested in Surrey [county in southeastern England], "control a UK property portfolio worth more than £8 million for which they appear to have no legitimate source of income".
The investigation which led to the arrest of the couple by NCA's International Corruption Unit was "supported by the National Accountability Bureau and the Federal Investigation Agency in Pakistan," read the statement.
"The man and his wife were questioned by NCA officers and have now been released under investigation."
The International Corruption Unit, which is principally funded by the Department for International Development (DfID) and concentrates its resources where there is a clear link with countries that receive overseas development aid from the UK, investigates serious criminal allegations of bribery and corruption.
This includes bribery committed either by a UK-based person or company to gain commercial advantage overseas, or the investigation of money laundering in the UK committed by foreign "Politically Exposed Persons".
Earlier on Monday, Law Minister Dr Farogh Naseem and British Home Secretary Sajid Javid jointly announced a justice and accountability 'initiative' between the UK and Pakistan aimed at repatriating "the looted wealth of the country".
The initiative — which the duo insisted will not target individuals but is a broader arrangement between the two governments to collaborate for the elimination of a variety of crimes — was launched during the British home secretary's official visit to Islamabad.

Hypothetically brilliant plan - but is it going to work? Definitely not. I will explain why - So if the UK convict a person and confiscate the money that money goes to the Ministry of Justice which is cash struck already.....how will they account for such money when it goes into a national treasury? Let me expand alittle, The British courts are already understaffed and overstretched, civil servants are understaffed, the police are understaffed, brexit is looming, so how on earth are they (uk) going to account for the cash and property confiscated? What records will the UK (seriously understaffed and a serious rescission looming round the corner) going to distinguish what money belongs to Pakistan and UK when no formal recordings are done at court?
This is a great gesture to please the eyes thats all. In reality wont happen trust me...only with politicians who have stashed away billions and Pakistanis come up with evidence otherwise rest will go to Uk.

Hundreds of Pakistanis are involved in Hundi,insurance and other financial frauds. You will see many in UK with luxury cars but having no declared sources of income. Most of the British Pakistanis hide their sources of income. So arresting one couple out of hundreds is not a big deal.

Shockingly, Law Minister Fargoh Nasim previously defended the landered money of MQM as he was the lawyer representing MQM and its leader Altaf Hussain. He was a frequent flyer from Karachi to London and vice versa. Now, he has signed to get the looted money? Anazing things happens in politics as PTI despite tall tale of bringing back MQM's money, appointed one of his attorney as Law Minister of the country. He know very well that charity should begin from home i.e Altaf Hussain's home. I hope he does not elicit attorney/client privilege here.

Good job. Let's continue the work. I am sure there are lots of Pakistanis in the US who have brought looted wealth from Pakistan in the US. I have seen circumstantial evidence of it in the US city that I live in where non-professional people who came from Pakistan just a few years ago with hardly any education and wealth would open up a small family business and then within 6-12 months start living like millionaires buying properties and driving expensive automobiles.
