KARACHI: The second edition of Standard Chartered Karachi United Youth League was launched here at the Karachi United Football Stadium.

The league, which is aimed at promoting sports amongst children, begins from Sept 29 at the Karachi United Football Club. A total number of 800 boys and girls will be participating in the three-month long football league that will involve 44 teams – 36 boys and eight girls. The boys will be from the age category of U-10, U-12 and U-14, each category having 12 teams each. The girls will have eight teams of U-16 category.

Over a three months period these team will not only play 128 matches but will also be involved in building the players’ character and improving their skills that will help them in making their life better.

“These teams come from our community centres established in Old Golimar, Clifton, Shireen Jinnah, Keamari, Malir, Baldia, Lyari, Korangi, Manghopir and Mauripur,” said Imran Ahmed, CEO of Karachi United. “The coaches there will hold trials and select their respective team for participation in the tournament.”

The real motive is to give these players who don’t get the chance to play high level competitions, a chance to get the feel of international professional events. In order to increase the standard of the league, official referees and match commissioners have been appointed for every match that will help them in polishing their skills,” he said.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Shazad Dada, CEO, Standard Chartered Pakistan said, “We are proud to partner for the second year with Karachi United to bring to you the “SC KU Youth League”.

“The value of sport to communities extends beyond sport for sport’s sake. It can play a role in bringing communities together, having a social and cultural impact, developing social capital and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour,” he said.
