Dr Qibla Ayaz, the chairperson of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), on Wednesday advised the Muslim world to be tolerant and respect the humanity during the month of Muharram.

In a video message, Dr Ayaz stressed the need to "promote the true purpose and spirit" of Muharram, which teaches tolerance, respect for humanity, truthfulness and compassion. He urged scholars to respect each other and promote the message of unity.

The CII chairperson said that Muharram is considered one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, and reminded that in the past, even warring nations used to stop bloodshed in the month.

The month of Muharram began today, which means that Ashura — Muharram 10 — will fall on September 21.
