LANDI KOTAL: The health authorities launched a five-day anti-dengue campaign in Jamrud subdivision of Khyber tribal district on Monday.

The officials said that 35 health teams along with representatives of different line departments and polio workers would participate in the campaign. The number of dengue patients in Jamrud has reached 150.

The officials said that health teams would pay visits to houses in Gharreeza, Wazir Dhand, Teddi Bazaar and Nayee Abadi localities of Jamrud. These areas have recorded maximum number of the total reported dengue cases.

Agency Surgeon Dr Shafeeq Afridi told Dawn that additional trainers were called from Peshawar to conduct fresh courses for health workers and members of line departments to enhance their capacity in convincing local people to adopt preventive measures.

He said that the training was further refined along with sensitising the health teams about use of effective awareness methods during the anti-dengue campaign.

“We discussed the issue of increasing number of dengue patients in Jamrud with our senior colleagues. In the light of their suggestion for capacity building of health workers and refining their campaign methods, we decided to launch the five-day campaign,” said Dr Shafeeq.

He urged local people to cooperate with the health teams and adopt preventive measures, which included covering of all water containers inside their houses and use of mosquitoes’ nets.

Authorities said that regular fumigation of the areas where health teams had detected presence of dengue larva was in progress.

They said that an improvement in the existing high temperature could also help in overcoming the spread of dengue virus.

Dr Shafeeq said that no dengue case was so far reported from Bara or Landi Kotal due to some timely measures taken by the authorities.

INJURED: Two persons were injured when a “proxy khasadar” opened fire on them in Ali Masjid locality on Monday.

Khasadar officials said that their proxy colleague Amanat Khan, who was performing duty in place of a regular khasadar, was under the influence of some intoxicants when the incident took place.

The injured were taken to Hayatabad Medical Complex where condition of one of them identified as Zarab Khan was stated to be critical. Amanat Khan was taken into custody after the incident.
