CHITRAL: A 17-year-old married girl committed suicide in Rech village in the north of upper Chitral by jumping into the river here on Saturday night, becoming the second such casualty during the current week.

Torkhow police station SHO Sher Nawaz Baig told Dawn that the teenage girl had married with villager Zar Ahmed Ahmed in October 2015, who had gone to Saudi Arabia a month after the marriage and returned in May this year.

He said that the deceased was deaf, adding she had started bickering with her in-laws when they talked to each other as she suspected that they were making a mockery of her.

SHO Baig said that on the day of occurrence, she went missing at the nightfall and during the course of search, her mobile phone and some articles of personal use, including shoes, were found placed on a stone on the river bank which indicated that she had jumped into the river from the point.

Efforts of the villagers and the police personnel to retrieve her body from the River Chitral was in progress till filing of this story late on Sunday.

The police officer said that she was four months into her pregnancy.

This was the second incident of suicide as two days ago a senior schoolteacher had committed suicide in Lotkoh Garam Chashma by hanging himself.
