KARACHI: Captain Sarwar Shaheed XI won the opening match of the Defence Day Basketball Tournament here on Thursday by beating Sawar Mohammad Hussain Shaheed XI 54-49 here at the Arambagh courts.

For the winning side, Talal Ahmed (17 points) was the main scorer while Mohammad moeed (10) and Fazeel Ahmed (6) also played well.

For the losing team, Asif Iqbal (18) and Saad Khan (13) displayed superb game. They were well backed up by Sameer (5).

The tournament started off with a fine ceremony to pay tributes to martyrs of the nation who fetched Nishan-e-Haider with their courageous deeds. Additional Secretary Youth and Sports Sindh, Hadi Baksh Zardari, was the chief guest on the occasion.

He said the Sindh government under Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will ensure full support for sporting activities in the province and praised Secretary Sports Haroon Ahmed Khan for his tremendous services for sports promotion and patronage.

The Defence Day basketball tournament is being jointly organised by the Karachi Basketball Associa­tion and PSWA.
