LAHORE: Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court has regretted the wastage of glaciers’ melting water in Pakistan and stressed the need for taking effective measures to meet the challenges of climate change.

He was speaking at a conference on environmental laws hosted by the Lahore High Court Bar Association here on Saturday.

Justice Isa pointed out that Pakistan was seventh most vulnerable country in the world to climate change and global warming. He said at least 383 billion plastic bottles of water were used in the world and these bottles were adding to environmental pollution.

He said Islam emphasises preservation of nature and environment making it clear to its followers to keep the roads clean and avoid cutting trees. He said there are more than 6,000 verses in the Holy Quran about climate change.

The judge also gave a presentation on climate change, discussing facts of a German research work in which it was claimed that there would be more plastic in water rather than fish.

He said it was very unfortunate that entire Indus water was going into sea unutilised and there was no system yet to save it.

Former chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani, Justice Farrukh Irfan, Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi also graced the event.
