SRINAGAR: The need for unity and organisation of journalists on a Trade Union basis to secure decent wages and humane conditions of service for journalists was emphasised by Mr. Tushar Zanti Ghosh, Editor of the ‘Amrita Bazar Patrika’ in his inaugural address at the All Jammu and Kashmere Editors’ Conference held here today [Aug 19]. Mr. Ghosh referred to the important part played by journalists in the national life of the country and pleaded for a united front among them for the maintenance of their rights.

Mr. Ghosh appealed for unity amongst journalists and said that the provincial Journalists’ bodies and the All-India Newspaper Editors’ Conference had done something and were trying to do something more for the press in British-India.

Mr. Ghosh deplored the conditions of working journalists and there was a time, not so long ago, when the newspaper was not a profitable business and the proprietor and the working journalist had both of them to be content with a living wage or even less than that. But those days had passed. Newspapers and journals were coming more and more into power, influence and prosperity.
