LAKE SUCCESS: A reference to Kashmir [and] Hyderabad … was made by the Chief Pakistan Delegate, Chaudhri Mohammad Zafrullah Khan, in the Ad Hoc Political Committee today [May 6]. He was replying to references to Pakistan made before the Committee yesterday by “Israel’s” representative, Mr Aubrey Eban, when the latter appeared to support his state’s application for UN membership. Mr Eban … had said: “… The procedure followed in this Committee … establishes new precedent. … normal procedures cannot point to any other occasion on which a candidate for membership has been called upon to express his views on international problems in the context of the discussion on admission to membership.

“[Mr Zafrullah] had referred … to his own harrowing ordeals in guiding his country’s application through the intricate routines of the General Assembly. Yet … when he … reached the stage of Committee discussion, [he] was not interrogated on his intentions with regard to Kashmir.” … In his written statement Mr Eban added: “And Hyderabad”... .

… Zafrullah Khan … said that Mr Eban’s references were “quite irrelevant” [and] Pakistan had not been subjected to “harrowing ordeals” in steering its membership.
