KARACHI: Three gunmen wearing shirts resembling police uniform looted $50,000 from a money exchanger within the remit of the Ferozabad police station on Thursday afternoon, police said.

They added that a representative of a money exchanger converted currency from a private bank in Bahadurabad. He was carrying $50,000 in a heavy blue-coloured bag in a vehicle belonging to the exchanger along with a guard and was supposed to give the currency somewhere in the area.

When the vehicle reached near a superstore located on Shaheed-i-Millat Road, three men travelling in a car intercepted it, snatched the pistol from the guard and took away the foreign currency worth over Rs6,000,000, said East Zone DIG Amir Farooqi.

The incident occurred at around 1.45pm.

The senior officer revealed that the robbers wore shirts resembling police uniforms and were armed with heavy weapons.

The DIG suspected that members of a gang of robbers that had been operating in South district and was busted, might have been reactivated after being released from prison.

The investigators were working to trace its members.

The police ruled out the possibility of militant outfits behind the incident.

It appeared that the robbers had done reconnaissance or they might have some inside information, the officer said.

The police have detained the guard for interrogation as he was armed with a pistol but did not put up any resistance.
