A retired soldier allegedly shot and killed six people and injured six others ‘out of frustration’ before taking his own life in Talagang tehsil of Chakwal district, Dawn reported.

The incident happened in the Darot village of Talagang tehsil on Monday evening when 50-year-old Mohammad Saeed opened indiscriminate fire on people near his house.

District Police Officer Adil Memon told Dawn that Saeed was a retired soldier who had married four times. He had divorced his first three wives and was in the midst of a civil litigation with a former wife who filed a maintenance suit in Attock after getting divorced. Memon said Saeed was depressed because of the ongoing litigation.

“Saeed did not have any animosity with anyone and carried out the shooting out of frustration,” the police official said.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Saeed opened indiscriminate fire at people sitting in front of shops and a hotel at a local market near his home. Resultantly, six people died on the spot while another six were injured. Saeed then shot himself.

Police and Rescue 1122 personnel shifted the bodies of the deceased and the injured victims to City Hospital Talagang.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Azhar, Nazeer Ahmed, Mohammad Sadique, Mohammad Iqbal, Mohammad Hassan Usmani and Mohammad Hassan.

“Four injured — Ahmed Gul, Mehr Khan, Shahzad and Ghazni Khan — have been shifted to Rawalpindi due to their serious condition, while the other two have been discharged,” Medical Superintendent Dr Abdul Razaq told Dawn.

Noor Sultan, an eyewitness, while narrating the incident said, “Saeed did not utter a single word and kept firing at anyone who came in front of him”.

Besides, DPO Memon said that due to his depressed mental condition “the villagers used to consider Saeed as insane and used to call him ‘Sheeda Malang’.”

“We are trying to trace his fourth wife, who was currently living with him, but has not been at home since the incident occurred,” he said.
