LAHORE: The Punjab police told the Lahore High Court on Friday that 87 cases were registered in the province against PML-N leaders and workers following rallies taken out on the arrival of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam at Lahore airport.

This was stated in a report submitted on behalf of the inspector general of police along with the record of the cases.

Acting Chief Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq directed the police to provide the PML-N workers with the record of the cases lodged against them and also directed the counsel for the party to come up with his arguments on the next hearing.

The judge also restrained the police from harassing the party workers.

PML-N Lahore-chapter President Pervaiz Malik had filed the petition stating the police had refused to provide record of the FIRs registered against the workers and leaders of the party.

He alleged that the police had also been harassing the party leaders and workers. He said not only the police registered cases against party workers but also added sections of anti-terrorism law in violation of the law.

The counsel pointed out that Pervaiz Malik had approached the police officials for the provision of the FIRs registered against the workers but they did not cooperate with them.

Another court disposed of a petition moved by PML-N’s candidate from PP-160 Yasin Sohal for the provision of certified details about polling stations, polling booths and the polling staff.

The court referred the petition to the Election Commission of Pakistan with a direction to decide the matter within two days in accordance with law.

Mr Sohal had pleaded that the details he sought from the Election Commission of Pakistan were required to be delivered to every candidate in order to dispel an impression of possible rigging in the upcoming election.
