KARACHI: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leader Senator Siraj-ul-Haq said on Sunday that the Pakistan Peoples Party had ruled Sindh for 10 years but it disappointed the people of the province.

Speaking at an Iftar party organised by the MMA’s local chapter in Jinjar Goth, the vice president of the five-party religious alliance demanded the Election Commission of Pakistan to carry out scrutiny of election candidates in strict accordance with Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

He said that Karachi generated the highest revenue for Pakistan, but its citizens were longing even for a drop of water.

He said the situation in the interior of Sindh was worse and even PPP leadership’s own hometown Larkana was facing pathetic conditions.

He said that the general elections had provided an option to the people to reject “corrupt and oppressive rulers”, who had repeatedly hoodwink the people.

He said that the people should give their mandate to honest, capable and religious leadership because the solution to all problems being faced by the people in Pakistan lay in the Islamic system.

Mr Haq, who is also the chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami, highlighted the aims of the MMA and said that the alliance’s objective was to strive for the enforcement of the Islamic system and to bring help for the poor, oppressed, deprived and crippled sections of society to give them dignity and raise their stature and make the rulers their servants.

He said: “We want to introduce a system in which rich or poor are treated equal, and where the poor and the oppressed can get justice at their doorstep.”

Referring to the coming general elections, he advised the people to ask the rulers what they did for them when they came to their homes begging for their votes.

He said that the people should refuse them and cast their votes in favour of the leadership which could deliver and bring a positive change in their life.

He said the PPP had been in power for the past many years in the province, but it never cared to bring improvement in the life of the common man and always sided with feudal lords of the province.

Speaking on the occasion, JI leader Asadullah Bhutto urged the people to defeat “anti-Islam, liberal and secular forces” in the elections from the platform of the MMA.

A resolution was also adopted demanding immediate provision of water and power supply to New Sabzi Mandi and steps to check incidents of theft and robbery there.

Senator Haq also paid a visit to the residence of 17-year-old student Sibika Shaikh, who was killed in her school in the United States, where she had gone for study.

He offered condolence to the bereaved family. He was accompanied by JI leaders Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rahman, Yunous Barai, Zahid Askari, Sarfarz Ahmad, Muhammad Aamir, Hamza Siddiqui and others.
