CANNES (France), May 21: “L’Enfant” (The Child), a gritty urban tale by Belgium’s Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, won the Cannes Film Festival’s top honour on Saturday, six years after the duo received the coveted Palme d’Or for “Rosetta”. The Golden Palm went to the brothers’ portrayal of a young couple living on the breadline in a French city.

The best actor award went to Hollywood star Tommy Lee Jones for his performance in a modern-day Western he directed, “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”. Spanish actress Penelope Cruz presented the prize to Jones at a gala ceremony. The picture, a tough-as-nails tale about death and redemption in the border area between Texas and Mexico, marked Jones’s film directing debut.

Israel’s Hanna Laslo won the best actress prize for her performance in “Free Zone”, a drama envisioning a Middle East freed of its borders.—Reuters/AFP
