KARACHI: After failing to get substantial financial support from the government, the family of the 1994 Sydney hockey World Cup gold medallist Mansoor Ahmed got him released from a private hospital on Saturday.

The Olympian goalkeeper was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on Feb 23 after his condition deteriorated due to cardiac problem.

The family cleared hospital dues amounting to approximately Rs 0.8mn — Rs 0.5mn by his employers, Customs and the remaining courtesy Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF),” Dawn has learnt.

Despite becoming weak and fighting for life, Mansoor’s condition appeared stable as he slowly talked about his feats when this correspondent visited him at the hospital on Friday.

After a day’s rest at home, the former Olympian is likely to be admitted to the NICVD on Monday.

It is pertinent to mention that a cardiac pacemaker and seven stents have already been implanted in Mansoor’s heart.
