DUBAI: Saqlain Mushtaq, the former Pakistan Test player and spin-bowling consultant for Peshawar Zalmi, emphasised here on Wednesday that spinners must realise they have a crucial role to play in the upcoming games of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) which has now entered an interesting stage.

Speaking exclusively to Dawn after the Zalmis’ practice session, Saqlain said: “I think it is very important for all the franchises to look after their spin department. Both Ibtisam and Asghar have done well for Peshawar Zalmi in the last few games. Though both didn’t play the last game because the situation demanded a different team combination.”

“I believe the spinners will gain confidence if they do well here in the United Arab Emirates,” he added.

When asked if the fans could see Asghar and Ibtisam bowling in tandem in the upcoming matches, Saqlain remarked, “It is too early to say but let’s see how things shape up.”

Commenting on the dearth of off-spinners in Pakistan’s domestic cricket, Saqlain said, “Pakistan is full of talent. You will see the off-spinners very soon provided the talent hunt programmes are properly organised all over the country.”

While Mohammad Asghar has had an ordinary third edition so far, Ibtisam Sheikh has impressed the fans and critics alike. Peshawar Zalmi are currently placed third on the points table, having won three as well as losing three.
