Five persons, including an infant, were killed and nine others injured when a jeep they were travelling in fell from a narrow hilly road near Muzaffarabad on Sunday, police said.

The vehicle was on its way to Batnara village from Nosada, some 40 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad, when it met the accident on a link road.

“While negotiating a curve, the vehicle went out of the driver’s control and fell more than a thousand feet down,” a police official told Dawn.

Three persons, including a 9-months old boy, died on the spot while the rest got injured and were rushed to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital, Muzaffarabad. Two of the injured succumbed to their wounds at the hospital, the official said.

The deceased were identified as Abid, son of Abdul Hameed; Shahzad, son of Bashir; Rafique, son of Jamshed; infant Ahmed, son of Attique and Khushnuda Bibi, wife of Mukhtiar.

Those hospitalised have been identified as Sajid, son of Abdul Hameed; Zulekha, wife of Muzaffar and her son Adeel; Zulekha, widow of Muhammad Hussain; Tabassum, wife of Attique and her son Hammad; Abdul Rashid, son of Mirullah; Hafeez, son of Mohammad Siddique; Mukhtiar, son of Kabir.
