KARACHI, May 3: Power breakdowns continued to occur on Tuesday in many localities of the city as consumers alleged that the Karachi Electric Power Supply was keeping them in the dark about loadshedding.

Calling from the Gadap Town at around 8pm, a resident said Memon Goth and adjoining areas had been experiencing a power breakdown since 2pm, adding that a prolonged power cut almost always occurred at night.

“There are many farms in this town and a power cut brings to a halt all the tube wells that enable us to do farming. Quite often, when we are not experiencing a power breakdown, we have to contend with low voltage, which is even worse because it damages our tube wells,” he complained.

He said other areas which suffered prolonged power breakdowns on Tuesday included Jam Murad Goth, Biroo Village, Samoo Village and Haji Murad Goth.

A resident of PECHS, Block 2, said a power breakdown had occurred in his locality the previous night from 7.30pm to 4am. “And today we had a power breakdown at 11.30am. When I called the regional complaint centre, I was informed that the KESC was carrying out loadshedding. But when I called the KESC head office, they said no loadshedding was being carried out. One wonders why the KESC staff can’t tell the truth,” he said.

A caller said the residential areas around I.I. Chundrigar Road experienced a power breakdown from 11.45am to 1.10pm on Tuesday. She added that the entire area buzzed with the sound of power generators.

A resident of North Nazimabad, Block Q, said his locality experienced a power breakdown for an hour every day.

“And Tuesday was no exception. Power supply remained interrupted between 1pm and 2pm,” he said.

A resident of Federal B Area, Block 14, called to say that his locality experienced a power breakdown in the evening. “For two days, our power cut-prone area remained unaffected. But on Tuesday a power cut occurred in the evening. I am making this phone call by candlelight,” he said.
