Fighting pollution

Published November 22, 2017

THERE were 311,189 deaths because of air pollution in Pakistan in 2015 while economic losses in billions of dollars and seven to 14 billion dollars needed annually for climate adaption.

Where will this money come from? From the rest of the world? I doubt it. We have no plans for controlling the causes of pollution. We have just topped the list of the most polluted country in the world.

Our Indus, which has been drying up for a long time, is now the most polluted river next to the Ganges. While the next six to eight months will still keep us in limbo, nothing will happen.

Will someone in the government tell us how much money has been allocated to environmental protection agencies in the country? The ministry of climate change and the EPAs should be the most important institutions.

This has been done in Canada and else where. On the contrary, we hear that the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency is probably going to have a budget cut.

I urge the people of Pakistan to realise that we have to fight for clean air, water and soil. We owe it to our younger generation to protect them from the upcoming onslaught.
