KARACHI: Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has added another prestigious accolade to her name, winning the ‘Best Documentary’ award at the 38th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards held in New York on Friday.

A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, which last year won an Oscar for ‘Best Documentary - Short Subject’, focuses on the life of an 18-year-old girl who is a survivor of an honour killing attempt.

Chinoy took to Twitter to announce her achievement from her verified handle @sharmeenochinoy: “Congrats team @SOCFilms what a great win tonight at the @newsemmys for Best documentary! #Pakistan.”

The documentary, which triumphed over four others — Children of Syria, Welcome to Leith, Thank You For Playing and The Look of Silence — to win the award, was also nominated in two other categories at this year’s Emmys — Outstanding Short Documentary and Outstanding Music and Sound.

Besides, Pakistani director Mohammed Naqvi’s Among The Believers was nominated in the category ‘Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary’, but it lost out to The Choice 2016 which is based on the lives of US President Donald Trump and former first lady of the US Hillary Clinton.

Chinoy holds the record of being the only Pakistani to win two Oscars, her first being for Saving Face in 2012 which is based on victims of acid attacks.
