KARACHI: District South won the Sindh Sports Board (SSB) Independence Day boxing tournament which was held at the Ali Mohammad Qambrani Boxing Stadium, Kakri Ground, on Thursday.

The winners fetched five gold and two silver medals in the competition that featured 10 senior weight categories.

As many as 29 pugilists belonging to all the districts of the city participated in the event.

Director SSB Shahzad Pervaiz Bhatti, who graced the finals, gave away the prizes.

The winners and runners-up will form two Karachi teams who will compete in the provincial event which is slated to take place in the metropolitan on September 20, a Sindh Boxing Association (SBA) spokesman said.

Besides the two Karachi outfits, teams from National Bank, Sindh Rangers, Sindh Government Press (SGP), Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah, Larkana, Benazirabad and Sukkur will also compete.

He added that the event will form criteria for the selection of the Sindh team for the National Games.
