Despicable Me 3

Published July 22, 2017

The holiday season is on … make it more ‘in-despicable’ with Despicable Me 3 where the world is at stake and Gru — leader of the Minions — is on the verge of discovering his long-lost twin brother Dru. Together with the help of his wife Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig), adopted children led by Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), and the Minions, Gru and Dru (both voiced by Steve Carrell), must join hands to save the world from falling into the hands of child-actor-turned-villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker).

There is a problem though — after an unsuccessful mission, Gru has been fired as a member of the Anti-Villain League and his wife Lucy leaves to support him and the kids. When they meet the super-wealthy Dru, they think that all their problems are gone but Dru wants to make a name in the field of heist like his brother and asks him to help him out — without the Minions who have been arrested for trespassing a talent show.

There is also the mystery of a missing diamond that holds the key to world supremacy. So Dru and Gru combine their skills (Dru’s skill is his wealth) to take down the super villain as well as recover the diamond, so that Gru can get his old job back.

The third instalment in the Despicable Me film series comes after the Minions movie and is the sequel to Despicable Me 2 (2013) where Gru found true love. It is full of hilarious moments as Gru’s brother Dru proves his incompetence by being the most stupid of all bad guys.

At first, the brothers are without the Minions, who decided to leave Gru after he told them that he would not return to villainy. As soon as they realise the error, the Minions return with a bang and take the audience on a journey that ends in Hollywood, right before the famous hills.

Everyone in the star cast does a commendable job, not making you realise that you are listening to world-class actors but to characters who have a purpose in the story. There are numerous jokes that will make you smile, especially the ones featuring the little yellow creatures who spend time in jail while searching for the ultimate bad guys.

When compared to Dru, Gru looks an expert thief, something he is not, and that is the beauty of this flick. Before the Minions embark on their next journey, catch them in action or you will end up being disappointed.

The movie is rated PG for mild action and rude humour.
