RAWALPINDI: The city traffic police on Tuesday launched a campaign against public transporters using substandard cylinders and arrested eight drivers for the violating ban on placing gas cylinders under passengers’ seats.

They were warned that substandard gas cylinders will be removed from their vehicles.

A traffic police spokesperson said three cases were registered with the Cantt, R.A. Bazaar and Waris Khan police station during the last 24 hours.

He said a special police squad was constituted to launch a crackdown against public transporters who fit gas cylinders under passengers’ seats.

The police team started checking public transport vehicles on Adiala Road,

Murree Road and Cantt and booked eight drivers.

CTO Rawalpindi Chaudhry Yousuf Shahid told Dawn the law is applicable on all public transport vehicles including busses and trucks, which can also not have more than the allowed number of gas cylinders.

“The use of substandard gas cylinder cannot be allowed and violators will be booked as this puts the lives of passengers and the general public at risk,” he said.
