KARACHI, Aug 8: The principal of the Sindh Medical College has cancelled the admissions of 28 final year students of the college, who had allegedly used unfair means with regard to their admissions.

Talking to Dawn on Friday, the principal, Dr Akbar H Soomro, said that the students had managed to get admissions out of merit with the connivance of some university and college staff.

After serving show cause notices and conducting of a thorough probe by a government committee, through giving a personal hearing to students in question, it was now established that their admissions to the college and study during subsequent years were illegal and they deserved legal action, including cancellation of their admissions, he informed.

Sources in the college said that after persuasion by the college, the University of Karachi had already scrapped the enrolment of 28 students, while efforts were underway for cancellation of enrolments of another 33 college students, belonging to different batches, who were believed to have acquired admissions based on fake or incorrect documents or information. In the given situation, the examinations and respective results would also stand invalid, opined the source.

Regarding the six college staff, below grade 16, allegedly involved in the admission scam, it was learnt that they would be given a final hearing by the college principal on August 9.

Cases of about half a dozen of administrative officers and teachers of the college, named in the “admission irregularities” were also being investigated by the higher authorities, the college sources said.
