KARACHI: A man was shot dead by alleged robbers for putting up resistance soon after he drew cash from an automated teller machine of a bank in Block-5 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

They added that Umair Shah, 35, drew over Rs20,000 cash from an ATM on main Rashid Minhas Road.

As he came out of the ATM kiosk, two armed motorcyclists tried to snatch cash from him and when he put up resistance, they shot at and wounded him before fleeing without the money.

The victim sustained a bullet wound on his leg and died of excessive bleeding, said Gulshan SHO Farooq Ahmed Sanjrani.

The incident occurred at around 3.30am.

The victim, a resident of Gulzar-i-Hijri, ran a water tanker business.

Medical student, brother injured

A young medical student of the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) and his brother were shot at and wounded in a high-security zone soon after they came out a hostel near the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) on Wednesday, officials said.

They added that Amir Shaikh, 23, a student of the JSMU, and his brother Yaseen Shaikh, 25, were riding a motorbike towards Lucky Star from the JSMU hostel.

When they reached near the NICVD, they were shot at by unidentified motorcyclists apparently over resisting a robbery bid. The incident occurred at around 11.25am.

Amir received one bullet wound on his right thigh while his brother Yaseen received three bullets — on his right hand, in abdomen and chest.

Both the victims were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where their condition was stated to be improving.

Initial investigation suggested that the incident appeared to be an outcome of a robbery bid, SSP South Saqib Ismail Memon said.
