THIS is apropos the letter ‘Larkana and garbage’ (May 8).

The Sindh government believes in keeping its cities clean. In Larkana, the Sindh government approved in December 2014 a scheme for the improvement of the existing sewerage system of Larkana city. This also includes the diversion of all sewerage pipes falling into Rice Canal towards the recently built oxidation ponds at various sites.

The work on the said scheme is going on and over 70 per cent of work has been done. This scheme will be completed in June 2018. To say that the Sindh government has not taken any step to resolve the issue of garbage and trash going into the Rice Canal is misleading.

Secondly, saying that in Larkana solid waste is not properly regulated shows lack of proper information. Larkana city garbage is daily removed from the primary collection centres by the municipal staff and dumped at garbage dumping sites, away from the city.

Unfortunately municipal laws are not followed by the public. This is the major cause of insanitation. The Larkana municipal authorities levy fines on all cattle owners who dump waste and garbage on road sides. Similarly fines are imposed on those who are found throwing garbage into the Rice Canal.

Finally, the public has to understand that cities are kept clean with the help of citizens. They should realise that the proper disposal of their trash is their responsibility. Let’s follow the age-old adage: “My trash, my duty”.
