JHANG: There are two laws in the country — one is for the Sharifs and the other is for the poor, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said at a public gathering in Shah Jewana on Friday.

Alluding to the prime minister’s family, Mr Bhutto-Zardari said there was no law to punish killers and thieves. The youth had rejected the double standards of the justice system, he said, adding that “...if Nawaz Sharif has any shame, he should resign immediately because two senior judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan have declared him disqualified”.

Even the joint investigation team and courts probing the Model Town incident couldn’t hold them culpable, Mr Bhutto-Zardari thundered from the stage in a tent decorated with the PPP’s tricolour flags and large banners.

The PPP chairman and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari were invited to Shah Jewana, along with other PPP leaders, by Makdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat, who had rejoined his parent political party earlier this year after a gap of 14 years.

The two PPP chiefs arrived at Shah Jewana in a helicopter and visited the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jewana where they offered prayers. Police were deployed along the route leading to the helipad and the venue.

Former federal minister Rana Farooq, Khalid Khan Kharal, Senator Farhatullah Babar, Jamil Somroo, MPA Neelum Jabbar and PPP district chapter president Agah Tariq Gillani, along with a large number of party workers, were present at the public gathering.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Zardari said the verdict in the Panama Papers case was mere eyewash and a joke played with the nation. How could the JIT decide the matter if the Supreme Court had failed to do so, he asked.

Nawaz Sharif wasn’t interested in running the country, Mr Zardari said, adding that he [the prime minister] spent public tax money on himself while bureaucrats ran the government. The PPP would expose the manipulation of previous elections by sweeping the upcoming general elections next year, Mr Zardari declared.

Former federal minister Qamar Zaman Qaira raised the issue of persistent loadshedding, saying the people were suffering 18-20 hours of loadshedding.
