After an illustrious career that spanned nearly 27 years, Mark William Calaway, famously known as The Undertaker, seems to have retired after Sunday night's WrestleMania 33 event in Orlando, Florida, the BBC reported on Monday.

However, the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is yet to release an official statement confirming the phenom's retirement.

The 52-year-old wrestling legend dropped his signature trench-coat, gloves, and hat in the middle of the ring after losing the main event against Roman Reigns.

Previously, the Undertaker held the record for the longest undefeated streak in WrestleMania events, which only ended in 2014 after 21 consecutive victories in the annual pay-per-view event.

Fans and colleagues from across the world have been paying tribute to the wrestling legend on social media, with the hashtag #ThankYouTaker trending on Twitter.

A fan captured the historical moment in wrestling's history and shared his love for the Taker on the micro-blogging forum.

One fan said, "And just like that, a bit of your childhood is lost to the wind and you have to accept that this is the end."

Some fans chose to celebrate the different personas the Undertaker adopted over the years.

Others seemed speechless as they posted clips of 'the Deadman' and his final moments in the ring.

The fellow wrestlers also refused to hold back and joined the Twitter world in praising the seemingly outgoing legend.

The 16-time world champion Rick Flair called him the 'biggest star in the history of the WWE'.

Fellow wrestling legend Mick Foley also took to twitter, saying, "#ThankYouTaker ─ My life has been so much better for having known you."

Jerry Lawler, a wrestler-turned-commentator, said the following about the Undertaker: "There will never be another quite like him."
