An employee of University of Karachi (KU), who was suspended from duty two years ago, was found dead on Sunday within the varsity's premises in what police officials believe to be a suicide case.

Mobina Town Station House Officer (SHO) Changez Ali Khan told Dawn that 40-year-old Niaz Ahmad's body was found floating in a well near a conduit in the varsity.

Initial investigations suggest that the body had been in the well for at least four days.

The SHO said police had reason to believe that Ahmad allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the well.

Ahmad, a resident of the KU Staff Colony, had been suspended by the varsity administration two years ago and was "emotionally disturbed", the officer claimed.

Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) President Shakeel Farooqi told Dawn that whenever an employee is suspended, an inquiry is launched to look into the case.

Farooqi said that the inquiry is supposed to conclude within 90 days. If the charges against the employee are proved, they are terminated and if they are found innocent, they are reinstated, he added.

However, the KUTS president regretted that Ahmad had remained suspended for the past two years without any progress on his case.
