RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army inducted a Chinese-built air defence system into its arsenal on Sunday.
Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was the chief guest at a ceremony to induct the Low to Medium Altitude Air Defence System (LOMADS) — LY-80 — into the army’s air defence system, according to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations.
The LY-80 is a mobile air defence system capable of tracking and destroying aerial targets flying at low and medium altitude.
Gen Bajwa said LOMADS would enhance the army’s capability to respond to current and emerging air defence threats.
Our Staff Reporter in Islamabad adds: The Chinese-made ground-to-air missile defence system has been with the military for a few years now, but was only formally inaugurated on Sunday.
The initial deal was for $300 million.
Based on the Russian technology, the surface-to-air missile system was introduced in the Chinese armed forces in September 2011.
