KARACHI: Hasan Mansoor and Fahim Siddiqui of The Progressive were elected president and general secretary, respectively, of a faction of the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) on Saturday.

Around 500 members of the KUJ exercised their right to vote in the annual elections 2017 held at the Karachi Press Club.

Mr Mansoor and Mr Siddiqui secured 278 and 248 votes, respectively, against their rivals from The Panel — Khurshid Abbasi (212) and Ashraf Khan (233).

Naimatullah Bukhari (236) and Shamim Bano (254) of The Progressive were returned as vice presidents, while Athar Hussain (265) of the same panel and Tahir Siddiqui (230) of The Panel were elected joint secretaries.

Ahmed Malik of The Panel, who contested for the post of treasurer, won with 254 votes.

Four candidates of The Panel — Abul Hassan (232), Arshad Hussain (222), Fatima Zaidi (237) and Muhammad Ali Hafeez (207) — and three candidates of The Progressive — Aslam Jangian (228), Bilal Farooqi (222) and Hanif Abid (223) — were returned as members of the executive council.
