India launched it's second French-designed Scorpene-class submarine in Mumbai on Thursday, NDTV reported.
The INS Khanderi, a diesel-electric submarine, can undertake a range of missions, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and surveillance, according to Indian media.
The submarine has the ability to launch attacks with precision-guided weapons and torpedoes, as well as tube-launched anti-ship missiles, both underwater and on surface.
This class of submarine has stealth capability and is designed to operate in all theatres.
It is set to undergo trials before it can be inducted into the Indian Navy.

@swesh That's incorrect. Indian scorpenes have no AIP installed because DRDO AIP was slated to be incorporated but rejected by the Indian navy. Hence the scorpenes come sans AIP and that means they need to resurface every so often.

The French sea scorpion may already have lost some of its venom. If The Australian newspaper in Sydney could be provided a cyber truckload of design details and other information about the Scorpene by an insider, as was divulged recently, then intelligence services worth their (sea) salt should also be able to tap in. The Australian Government also controversially ordered the Scorpene for the Royal Australian Navy ahead of a larger Japanese competitor.

@AHMED SHAHID AIP is an arcane technology, which took France and Germany many years to develop and prove, in terms of efficiency as well as safety. Indian navy wants DRDO AIP to be tested on other test beds before deployment on operational submarine. So these two submarines are currently with no AIP but later when they fall due for long refits, the homemade AIP can be installed.

It is clear that China managed to trap Pakistan because of a weak government. For Pakistan everything was OK as we suffered a lot internationally. Standing with China and fight with rest of the world is not at all good for Pakistan. Russia was never with us, so don't believe we are supported by them in future. Pakistan must stand alone as a respected and developing country like India. Please don't take our country towards a global isolation for our association and benefiting China. China is a struggling nation they can't do any good for us. Remember this....

This is nothing but wastage of scarce resources raised by increasing taxes on the people. Instead either reduce taxes or spend the money for development purposes.

India has never been alone. It was helped by the west sometimes covertly and now openly. Indian nuclear test in 1974 was result of covert western support.
As for Pakistan agreed that too proximity with China is not good but we can only be able to stand alone if we have great system that supports fairness, transparency and an education that produces innovators. So far we had PPP that just wasted 5 years, PMLN which just believes in mega projects. We need PTI in power as this is only party that is determined to change our broken system. We also need to get rid of quota system as it has produced professionals that are employable only by government sector .

Scorpene subs are an example of why it is a bad idea to put tactical deterrence on diesel-electric subs like the Agosta. We need nuclear submarines with MIRV tipped ICBM which can operate far away from "hunter-killer" diesel subs like Scorpenes deep inside the Indian Ocean. That would be real strategic deterrence.

Just remember like we have fighter aircrafts for interceptor(Single engine) and Intradictor(twin engine). These submarines are also same, diesel electric submarines are more for self defence and patrolling sovereign waters whereas nuclear subs are more likely for long range missions.India currently has 2 Nuclear subs(Chakra and Arihant) and most likely acquire 2 more each of attack and ballistic missile launcher submarines by 2020.

Today in spite of formidable stock piles of most advance nuclear and non-nuclear weapons of mass destruction there is no true peace no where on the earth planet. You are correct Ahmed bhaijaan. Indian forces have stringent requirements and do not pass off any and all tests as victories, with 100% success rates like for instance, first time submarine launched nuke-missile tests with 100% precision, just for deterrence value it provides. Hopefully we do not get exposed in an actual war situation like many times earlier.

Do you even know the meaning of 'The Greatest' before even thinking about ‘democracy’ ie there is no better democracy in the whole wide world than India?
Thousands of years old democracies would be envying a 70 years old democracy when comparing on parameters such as India's far superior press freedom, far superior fair and quick justice, far superior accountability of politicians, far superior casteism, far superior rights of minorities. The list goes on...
Look in the dictionary for the meaning of 'The Greatest' before getting touchy!

Scorpene Class submarine is a very troublesome submarine. Many European countries have canceled their orders. The few countries who operates these submarine are desperately trying to get rid of it by selling it to third world. Indian Navy sign the contract for these subs in 2005 and it took more then a decade to be ready for sea trials. French ran many problems in its and operations. All this is very well documented .
