Pakistan is in serious danger of failing to qualify directly for the International Cricket Council's (ICC) World Cup 2019 in the United Kingdom as it currently sits at eighth position in the One Day International Team Rankings.
Pakistan is at eighth position with 89 points, two behind Bangladesh and two ahead of the West Indies, said an ICC press release.
A former world champion, Pakistan has sets its sights on direct qualification for the World Cup 2019 as it takes on the in-form reigning world champion and number-one ranked Australia in a five-ODI series starting in Brisbane on Friday.
To at least maintain its pre-series ranking points, Pakistan needs to win one match of the series, while victories in more than one match will earn it crucial points.
If Pakistan wins two matches, then it will join Bangladesh on 91 points but will be ranked behind its Asian rivals by a fraction.
In the scenario of Pakistan winning the series, it will move ahead of Bangladesh and, as such, will enhance its chances of qualifying directly for the event it won in Australia in 1992.
On the flipside, Australia will retain its pre- series points if it wins the series 4-1, while it will concede one point if it wins 3-2. Australia can fall from the top pedestal but to make it happen, Pakistan will have to win by 4-1 or better.
However, considering that Australia leads Pakistan 33-16 on a head-to-head in its backyard, including 15 wins in 19 ODIs this decade, this looks highly improbable.
The ODI team rankings, unlike the Test rankings, are updated after each match and the ODI predictor function is available here.
Host England and the seven highest-ranked sides on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings as on 30 September 2017 will qualify directly for the event proper to be held from May 30 to July 15, 2019.
The four bottom-ranked sides will be joined by six teams from the ICC World Cricket League in the 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 and the top two sides will complete the 10-team World Cup line-up.
Meanwhile, third-ranked India takes on fifth-ranked England in a three-ODI series starting in Pune on Sunday, January 15. While India will be aiming to narrow the gap with second-ranked South Africa, England will be targeting an upward movement.
India can rise to as high as 114 points if it sweeps the series, but if the series result is reversed, then England can move up one place to fourth and India can slide to fifth.

Pakistan is a good side to qualify for the WC2019. If not directly, sure they can come through the qualifying tournament. This will also give them good practice of international ODI matches which they are lacking currently as there are no international matches being organized in Pakistan.

Pak should concentrate on their own performance and shut the mouths of the criticizers by their actions. I am really upset with the comments made by Chappell in Australia, that Pak should not be invited over to Australia in the future if their performance does not improve, i take it as a very offensive statement, did Pak say this when we whitewashed them 2-0 in UAE two years ago, and that was after 20 years that anyone had done so. The best way to shut such comments is to go out there and win this series. We have to work with the team selected, so lets not comment on selection which cannot be changed.

@fair Please understand the difference in level of competition at domestic and international level. Players who score centuries at dead Pakistani pitches cannot score runs in Australia and South African on hard and bouncy pitches against quality fast bowling.
The solution is to send U19 and 'A' level teams to play internationally. PSL is also a good initiative where local players can rub their shoulders with international players.

Pakistan has talent but its not allowed to come at top due to Politics and illegal money involved in PCB. Talented guys are often asked for money by PCB and if they mange to pay and got in, then politics does not allow these players to play for their country. Unless these malpractices and politics does not stop Pakistan will be at bottom.

Maybe if all the players who had taken money to throw the game away returned the money it may improve our rankings.
If Pakistan are going to do well at ODI they need to do the following asap -
1. Get rid of Mickey Arthur
2. Get rid of Inzi
3. Get rid of Wahab - who is still corrupt
4. Do not play Yasir Shah
5. Select players on performance not reputation
The following Side will do well in the following order -
1. Sharjeel 2. Azhar Ali 3. Umar Akmal (wicket Keeper) 4. Asad Shafiq 5. Hafeez 6. Malik 7. Imad Wasim 8. Sohail Khan 9. Mohammed Amir 10. Hassan 11. Junaid.
This squad gives them a balance of everything with the exception of a specialist wicket keeper but given how things are with sarfraz better to go without. Also we have right and left arm bowlers and three spin options.
They need to aim at posting totals in excess of 350 if they are to stand a chance at winning.

Kamran Akmal should consider ahead of Rizwan for upcoming ODI's against Australia.
Even though K.Akmal is not the future of Pakistan, at present kamran is better than Rizwan in batting as well as keeping and he can hit hard , keeping in mind Pakistan have to beat Australia atleast in 2 ODI's to make sure it qualify directly in 2019 WC .
Sarfraz will miss very badly in ODI's because he is the backbone of the team who contributes consistently to the score board ..

We don't know how to run, jump, swim etc. Secondly, we should learn basic rules and follow strictly from start. If we start playing football without keeping in mind off side rule, the game developed from there will be very hard to adjust. Same happened with cricket as bowlers are allowed to bowl "watta" and lbw rules relaxed for batsmen. Sport is like war, about positioning yourself. Investment in sport only comes afterwards.

the only way Pakistan can win any game is by surprising Australian with some unusual tactics ... we know azhar has asked for hafeez specially so we can see hafeez against warner and khuwaja with new ball and imad against smith, also we know 250 plus target is highly unlikely to be achieved and if we bat first and score about 280 we can win by taking wickets early ...
but its Australia not England so imad might not be as handy as he was with new ball in uk
with sarfaraz back home I don't see our batting as solid at all, the shoulder of scoring quick runs without getting out is on malik and hafeez rest will either score v slow or will get out trying to score fast, I do believe the trump card for Pakistan to win any game is sharjeel and babar azam and to be honest that's it ...
we will lost series 5-0, going into the series with this mentality will help Pakistan as that means we got nothing to lose lets play our A game.

No matter how bad performance Pakistan team is giving and every one knows current Pakistan team is the worse if we compare from the previous teams of so far and players, but it is time to motivate the team / players rather than criticizing and saying 5 - 0 on cards.
Need to work from grass roots (Under 16 and U19 teams) to make sure Pakistan team is on track ..and from now on all Pakistan home series should be in Australia or Africa if not in Pakistan ...Playing in UAE and winning the series in UAE is good for nothing..

But we have to pick the right players, meaning look at your domestic bowler's likes of Bismillah Khan, Sadaf Hussain and much more to choose from. That is what needed, where you getting Hafeez in these 11 players who is tried and tested with failures. Start picking players based on their merit not which province and what Parchii they have.

It is not Misbah's fault, what can Misbah do if he is not given the best Pak side i.e. in bowling. There were lot of good batting performances which were not backed up by bowlers.
Right now Pak has one bowler who can be successful overseas and that is Mohammed Amir the rest of Pak bowling line up is mediocre and the reason Amir is not successful is because opposition plays Amir carefully and then bludgeon the other bowlers. The reason Amir was successful in the past is because of Mohammed Asif, the best swing bowler in the world, bowling from the other side. Therefore, when Amir and Asif was bowling in tandem there was no respite for the batsmen and they will crumble under the pressure. So in a nutshell, by punishing Asif more than he deserve, Pak is punishing itself.

I don't think Pakistan need to worry about it because they have to be at no 8 by September and during this time they will play lots of ODI including a series against WI, BD, Champions trophy etc. So even if they fail to win in Australia it wont mean they have to play qualifier. Not to mention BD has a lot of ODI away from home which they less likely to win so Pakistan sure going to be ahead of them. WI is the one who should be worried tbh

Azhar Ali , Misbah & Waqar Younis are the reasons for our down fall in one day cricket.
What they did in last world cup? Kept Sarfraz out for 3 oneday which we lost.
They took out Fawad Alam after his century in one day international.
They never gave proper chances to the players from karachi. If Khalid latif got chances they way they gave to sami Aslam, Umar Amin, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Maqsood & babar Azam, Khalid Latif could break many records.
Other victims are Khurrum Manzoor, Tabish Khan, Mohd Sami, Shahzeb Hasan, Asif zakir and of course Fawad ALam,

Selection also a factor.Although, After inzy took over selection, there is some improvement. Boy it needs a lot of work towards the fitness of the players. Some old players also should be shown the door to inject new blood. Particularly, Fawad Alam and some other players also be given a chance and I am sure the team will have positive improvement.

have seen Pakistan golden days, Wasim, Waqar, Akib,Imran, Saqlan, Javed, Imran, Inzmam, Saleem malik, abdul quader so many stater at the peak. Feel sad for this situation now. But its not the fault of Pakistani team player . Extremist and terrorism destroy the Pakistan like a cancer and Cricket is also victim of that.

I believe we will perform better in ODI. The main reason of our ranking plummeting recently is the lack of all rounders in the side and i think we have found 2 very good all-rounders in Nawaz and Imad Waseem. The absence of sarfaraz will hurt us though and big time. It will be better contested at least then the test series

Pakistan are taking Aussie wickets as of now. So as as I wrote yesterday Pakistani supporters need not lose heart and should stop trolling their players, selection committee, et al (we Indians too hit at our players at the slightest drop in performance :-) ). I'm willing to move back to Pakistan and willing to donate my time to fix Pakistan Cricket. I can't stand to see Pakistan lose to a team which can only win on its own turf. Australia is not better in talent but knows how to manage each situation and execute accordingly. In the last three test, except the 2nd, Pakistani team played with no sense of urgency or desire to win. Batting Stunk from top the bottom except for Younus and Shafiq. Pakistan Cricket needs to be Managed by a "DESI" who understands the cultural issues and how to be successful and, I might add, roll heads if necessary. I highly suggest team and management read Pat Riley's Books (The Winner Within or Showtime) on performance. Are you Listening PCB? I'm willing to work FREE OF CHARGE but you would have to promise me to let me use my STICK when necessary!

Sad to read the truth. Question is why so in a nation that plays only cricket. They have all the talent and knowledge. But why?
Here is my understanding:
1. Where 8 or 9 player doesn't understand English then why they have a coach who is from Australia? Australian accent is even tough to understand for a common person.
2. Imran Khan world cup winning team members:
There are many team who have won the WC. I have never seen any team whose players are treated like God. Don't know where is Sanath Jayasuriya or Kaluwitharna or Sandhu.. see the hype of all those players who had been part of WC team including IK.
They think they are from Mars not from Earth and so after IK, take to Akram as captain or waqar as captain or so on.. all did nothing to improve but destroyed everything. They lived with one story.. their time during WC and with IK. There bread and butter is only IK captaincy.
I heard many time, Akram or Rameez or few others.. over time I sensed they have only IK saga ..
