PIA plane clips wing of stationary aircraft at Toronto Pearson airport

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-790 from Toronto to Lahore was suspended after the plane clipped the wing of an Air France plane while taxiing to its gate Tuesday evening at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
According to CityNews, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority spokeswoman Natalie Moncur said the collision happened around 6pm.
The PIA plane's wing tip hit the wing tip of the Air France plane which was parked at a gate at Terminal 3, the report said.
No one was injured, and the damage to the plane is relatively minor.
A PIA spokesman, when asked to comment, confirmed the incident and said the matter is under investigation.
"Apparently it was due to some error during marshalling by the ground personnel," he said.
"There's some damage to the equipment which may need replacement... All steps are being taken for making the aircraft serviceable as soon as possible."
A night stop has been declared at Toronto and passengers who had checked in for the Toronto-Lahore flight have been provided hotel accommodation, he added.

I think we have to start giving the management and pilots of PIA some benefit of the doubt. The company is already demoralized by all the bad publicity, accidents, blunders and scandals.
Accidents happen all the time, with every carrier in the world. PIA is in the news for all the wrong reasons, and I blame Pakistani media for never reporting anything positive or encouraging about the airline's operation or even a glimmer of hope that things are improving. No company is entirely bad - or no one will buy your products or services.
The fact there are many Pakistanis who feel patriotic enough to give PIA a chance to convince them of improved service quality and performance, and that PIA still flies to dozens of international destinations, in itself shows that things cannot be as bad as some like to believe or depicted by negative comments.

The problems of PIA are so complex that it needs to be shut down. It is the fiduciary duty of the government to stop wasting public funds in scores of failed government owned business ventures like the PIA and the Pakistan steel mills etc. The function of the government is to govern and not to create business ventures at the cost of the public for creating cushy jobs for retired bureaucrats or for any political expediency.

Recently air hostess was caught on camera stealing in a shop in Toronto and detained and not allowed to return to Pakistan. Nothing going well for PIA.

PIA is very fast losing people's confidence and trust. Pakistanis living abroad are now booking with airlines from Gulf and Turkey when they travel to Pakistan. PIA needs to take steps which can restore confidence. I would have suggested that maintenance and final clearance of the vessels should be outsourced to some renowned European company. And then it should also seek some Chinese investment through sale of minority stock.

We should be realistic in our thinking. After the ATR incident every body is criticising PIA. We should remember PIA is not at fault all the time. It was the miscalculation of local staff and they did not properly guide the PIA Captain for taking the aircraft to the gate. When Air France aircraft was there, PIA aircraft could have been asked to be parked at a safe distance, I mean not close to Air France plane. This was necessary as the weather was foggy at the airport.

What has PIA got to do with it when the Marshaller,the wing walker and the Visual Gudance system guides the aircraft on the wrong centre line at a time when the visibility from the cockpit is also marginal due to Rain.
Any idea that the Pilot on 777 can't see the wing from the cockpit .

I have worked in aiports and parking of planes in aprons at hangers is guided either by groundstaff or in more advance airports automatic system. The pilots don't have back view mirrors as cars do, so it looks like groundstaff problem.

I have been travelling on PIA for nearly 50 years on international routes. Although, standards have not been maintained in food, seats and cabin staff, I have full confidence in the ability of Pilots and engineering staff. Many Pakistanis are working at all levels in other airlines after working in PIA. I am sorry there are a lot of trolls who constantly undermine every aspect of life in Pakistan and take every opportunity to run down the country. Perhaps, they should try their luck abroad and see how well they do.

This not pilot error; once the plan lands it the responsibility of the ground crew to direct the plane to its 'parking spot'. The marshals on the ground are 100% responsible. The only caveat being that the pilot followed their directions.

Also, I believe that the passengers take things for granted when flying and do things they would never do if flying other airlines. Any person who has travelled knows that tug masters take the aircraft to the gate.

PIA should be split into two corporations and both must be sold to the private sector. Government should build schools and not spend money on this perennial loss making company filled with incompetent political appointed staff.

@LAHORI KID Where from did you get the information that PIA has the best pilots. Best pilots are with the airlines which respect and pay more to its pilots.

I think airport authorities have got it wrong. they don't subscribe to Pakistani media. this is definitely caused by ppp government's corruption. there just cant be any other explanation.

Dear Dawn and dearest readers
Can we stop being overly-negative and sensationalizing things? Just have a look at below article from 'Flight Safety Foundation':
"Based on data developed by IATA, the Foundation estimates that 27,000 ramp accidents and incidents — one per 1,000 departures — occur worldwide every year. About 243,000 people are injured each year in these accidents and incidents; the injury rate is 9 per 1,000 departures."
