KARACHI: A young man was shot dead and his uncle was injured in a suspected sectarian attack in the Sachal area on Saturday night.

According to police, Syed Kamran Abbas, 35, and Anwar Ali Kazmi, 50, were returning home from a Majlis in New Rizvia Society when men on a motorcycle opened fire on them on University Road.

They were taken to the Dow University Hospital where doctors pronounced Mr Abbas as dead.

Superintendent of Police Dr Fahad Ahmed said the victims belonged to the Shia community and the incident might be linked with sectarianism.

A spokesman for the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen condemned the incident. “When will the army chief take notice of killings of the mourners in the city?” asked MWM leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas in a statement.

In a separate incident, 19-year-old Israr Ahmed was shot dead in Muscat Colony of Orangi Town, a police spokesperson said.

ARRESTED: Meanwhile, Rangers claimed to have arrested a man for his suspected involvement in the targeted killing of 27 people.

Acting on ‘credible information’, the paramilitary force picked up Syed Mehroz Mehdi Naqvi alias Mehdi Shah, a spokesperson for the Rangers said. The suspect belonged to a banned outfit.

According to sources, the suspect has confessed to killing people on sectarian grounds. The Rangers spokesperson claimed that Mehdi Shah was involved in the killing of Mufti Dilfraz Muawiya and Abu Bakr in the Site area in 2013 and Mufti Usman Yar Khan, Mohammed Ali and Mohammed Rafiq in 2014.

Furthermore, he said, the suspect was involved in cases of kidnapping for ransom, robbery, extortion and other crimes. On information provided by the suspect, Rangers seized arms and ammunition which were hidden at a secret place.
