KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday took notice of an ‘encounter’ by police officials of two students in the Nipa Chowrangi area of the metropolis on Friday night, said a spokesperson of CM House.

The provincial chief executive directed the Inspector General of Sindh Police to conduct a full inquiry to ascertain the veracity of the claims made by the relatives of the slain student, and asked for the report to be submitted after the inquiry's completion.

DIG East has been instructed to hold a transparent and impartial inquiry into the incident and submit a comprehensive report based on facts to ensure justice.

Shah vowed that if the police officials had misused their powers, strict action would be taken against them.

“If Ateequllah was a student and peaceful, justice would be provided to his parents,” promised Shah.

Gulistan-e-Jauhar SHO Chaudhry Shahid on Friday night had claimed the death of Syed Ateequllah in an ‘encounter’, and had also claimed that a pistol was seized from the individual.

Ateequllah’s counsin, Syed Azizullah was also injured in the alleged encounter.

However, Syed Matiullah, cousin of the deceased told Dawn on Saturday night that Ateequllah was a cadet in Rangers Public School, located on Superhighway.

He added that his deceased cousin was studying in second year while the injured Azizullah was supposed to get admission in Karachi University later this year.

"Both cousins were on their way to attend an English language coaching class on University Road, and were on a motorbike when the police party indicated them to stop," claimed Matiullah.

“The policemen chasing them on the bike slipped and fell after my cousins had stopped the bike.”

The relative alleged that the policemen opened fire after they fell from the bike, and used abusive language when the injured Azizullah asked to be taken to a hospital.

He also said that student identity cards were shown to the policemen.

Ateequllah's body was found at a mortuary of Chipa Foundation early morning on Saturday, as the police did not inform them of the body's whereabouts, said a relative of the family.

The relatives urged the authorities to hold an inquiry into the incident and give them justice.
