THE Institute of Marine Biology was established in 1969 at the University of Karachi as a federal entity to pursue research in marine science.
The institute, a national centre, has produced renowned researchers in marine sciences who are engaged in various departments related to marine, fisheries and ocean sciences across the country.
The centre was upgraded as a Centre of Excellence under an act in 1974 but its infrastructure, faculty, training and research funds remained static.
Its limited budget, especially stipend for M. Phil/PhD scholars, and an inadequate infrastructure has put it in dire financial straits.
Despite the financial situation, faculty members have been striving to achieve scientific goals.
However, to achieve the aspirations and goals and excellency in marine biology the authorities need to furnish funding and other requisites to upgrade the institute to a National University of Aquatic Sciences.
This measure will go a long way to bring development and prosperity to the coastal areas of Sindh.
