SRINAGAR: Violent clashes between police and protesters erupted in India-held Kashmir on Saturday following the killing of three militants in clashes with Indian forces.

The gunbattle began after troops acting on a tip cordoned Panzgam village early on Saturday, said Indian army spokesman Col Nitin N. Joshi.

The militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen, Mr Joshi claimed.

Later, residents in Pulwama town threw rocks at police and paramilitary soldiers and chanted slogans against Indian government.

The troops fired teargas and pellet guns to disperse the protesters. No casualties were reported.
