TEHRAN: Iran has passed a law allowing the government to grant citizenship to the families of foreigners killed while fighting for the Islamic republic, the official IRNA news agency reported Monday.

The law could apply to “volunteers” from Afghanistan and Pakistan who are fighting in Syria and Iraq against militants, including the militant Islamic State (IS) group and Al Qaeda's Syrian franchise, Al-Nusra Front.

“Members of the parliament authorised the government to grant Iranian citizenship to the wife, children and parents of foreign martyrs who died on a mission... during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) and afterwards,” it said.

Citizenship must be awarded “within a maximum period of one year after the request”, IRNA added.

Iranian media regularly reports on the death of Pakistani and Afghan volunteers in Syria and Iraq, with their bodies are buried in Iran. More than three million Afghans live in Iran, one million as legal migrants however no figures are available on the number of foreign fighters killed during the Iran-Iraq war.

Iran is a staunch supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and provides financial and military support to his regime. Iran's outgoing parliament will serve until late May.

Tehran says its Fatemiyoun Brigade, comprised of Afghan recruits, are volunteers defending sacred Shia sites in Syria and Iraq against militants of IS.

The Islamic republic denies having any boots on the ground and insists its commanders and generals act as “military advisers” in Syria and Iraq.

Very sad. Such decision will never allow peace to be established in Syria. Many Shia from Pakistan will avail this opportunity as a attempt to leave Pakistan for monitory benefits. The pretext is to protect sacred places. Wonder if there will ever be peace between shia and Sunni, not at least after such policies.

Karachitee May 02, 2016 07:18pm

Good! Now probably Saudia will announce the same thing.

Iqbal May 02, 2016 07:27pm

Those who join from Pakistan, should never be allowed back in Pakistan.

Truth May 02, 2016 07:27pm

They are sent to kill innocent Syrians not protect sacred holy places

Arsalan I Khan May 02, 2016 07:38pm

This is a joke! Firstly they should explain how Pakistanis are able to cross borders and how and under which international law are they allowed to 'fight' in Syria! Pakistani government should officially protest against it and should make it public that anyone going out of Pakistan without valid visa for 'religious terrorism' will not be allowed back!

Shahid May 02, 2016 07:43pm

Such people are a grave danger to society and must not be allowed to reintegrate at will in Pakistani society. Iran can accept them happily, they will be the biggest source of radicalization and extremism in Iranian society. But such initiatives will fuel sectarianism and also lays bare open actual Iranian designs in the region

Salute Iran. The only country sincere in his struggle against ISIS

asif May 02, 2016 08:00pm

This clearly says it all, how good our neighbour is to us. What a neighbour.

Zeeshan May 02, 2016 07:59pm

Strict scrutiny should be re-established and make the borders watertight.

SadFaces May 02, 2016 08:18pm

There was a report on BBC showing that Iran authorities used this bill to force Afghan men from Iran to go to Syria and use them as front line fodder in the war.

Shahid May 02, 2016 08:48pm

Unless Iran will be confronted at highest level by Government of Pakistan, Iran is unlikely to mend its ways. Similarly parents are advised to keep a sharp eye on their sons to check them before they enter this death trap

mohammed May 02, 2016 08:55pm

Pakistan and the world should take notice

Zakuta May 02, 2016 09:01pm

This shows failure of Iran in protecting unpopular governments in Iraq & Syria with natives and now planing to involve Pakistanis for their ill planed proxy wars in the aforementioned countries. Later will throw blame at Pakistan for inflicting trouble in the Islamic countries.

Taimoor Khan May 02, 2016 09:05pm

Pakistan needs to strip off citizenship of any national who is "volunterliy" fighting for any other state then Pakistan. Burn your boats and never come back to Pakistan. We are better off without such individuals who are dont consider motherland absolute sacred.

Bajwa May 02, 2016 09:18pm

All those Pakistanis who are fighting in Syria either for Iran or Saudia, they should be declared as terrorists and should not be allowed back in Pakistan. Moreover govt must find and ban all recruiting organization and individuals involve in the process. Foreign office need to ask explanation from Iran.

Zia ur Rehman May 02, 2016 09:47pm

Many Iranians want to leave Iran. Just imagine the helplessness of those who want to get Iranian citizenship! I along with many of my friends worked in Iran in 90s. It was so easy to get citizenship at time but no one wanted it

joe May 02, 2016 10:45pm

Do you see where you stand

irfan May 03, 2016 03:10am

No need of more evidence of Iranian Involvement in Pakistan

Ghaznavi May 03, 2016 03:18am

@Hashim Khatmal response

MAK May 03, 2016 08:53am

Those who will leave PAK to Iran must not allow to enter back to PAK

Vibrant Pakistan May 03, 2016 09:28am

Great move by Iranian Govt.

Zafar May 03, 2016 02:46pm

This can be argued both ways ... why do we as Pakistanis feel like the rest fo the world owes us???

Irfan UK May 03, 2016 04:05pm

Pakistan should condemn this act by Iran

Sudhir Neyalasinger May 03, 2016 08:01pm

Iran has lost it.

Abu Mohammed May 03, 2016 08:12pm

Iran never hides, last week Iranian leader openly declared their full support for Palestinians. Iran supporting those fighting with declraed terrorists by the world (ISIS & Nusra)

Ahmed Hanif May 03, 2016 08:23pm

@Abu Mohammed .. Excellent !

Abu Mohammed May 03, 2016 08:28pm

Terrorists should not be supported but those fighting terrorists should be supported.
