GUJRAT: The district government has turned a landfill site into the “Wall of Gujrat” displaying portraits of national heroes and recipients of Nishan-i-Haider, besides highlighting local culture, history and literature as part of a city beautification project.

The Wall of Gujrat has been built outside the general bus stand on a site previously used for dumping garbage.

Under the project, a greenbelt but developed at the site and then the well-designed wall was built, adding to the beauty of old GT Road.

The private-public partnership project launched two years back at a cost of Rs12.5 million was funded by some local businessmen, whereas the land and technical support for it was provided by Gujrat Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA).

The wall displays portraits Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and other national heroes, while local literature, culture, industry and history have also been highlighted through different murals.

District Coordination Officer Liaqat Ali Chatha, Gujrat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) president Mian Ijaz, ex-MPA Haji Nasir Mahmood and Anjuma Tajaran president Javed Butt inaugurated the wall at a ceremony held at the site.

Speaking on the occasion, the DCO said the district government had so far got completed a good number of public welfare and city beautification projects in collaboration with the community, including Kidney Centre, Trauma Centre, Burns Unit, ICUs at Aziz Bhatti Shaheed and Shabeer Sharif Shaheed hospitals, besides Sara-i-Alamgir’s Pubbi Park and Canal View Park etc.
